ABSTRACT:
A start-up is a young company that begins its business under conditions of high uncertainty and risk, yet achieves rapid annual growth rates. Such companies are significant for economic development, as they strongly influence the country’s gross domestic product, exports, and employment. The paper aims to present the most significant definitions, characteristics, and contributions of start-ups to the economy based on a review of the literature, as well as to highlight the position of Serbian start-up companies at both the regional and global levels. Currently, Serbian start-up companies are ranked 14th in the Eastern European region. Serbian start-ups hold strong potential, but enhancing technological adoption and productivity is crucial for improving their regional and global position.
