THE ROLE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNCATION TECHNOLOGIES IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
pp. 490-505
ABSTRACT:
Information and communication technologies (ICT) are a collection of technologies and applications that enable electronic processing, storage, and data transfer to a wide range of users and clients. The rapid expansion of ICT has had a significant impact on the manner and location of the production of goods and services, the characteristics of goods and services, and the way goods and services are marketed and distributed to final consumers. The focus of this research is the economic impact of ICT development on the process of globalization and regionalization, with special emphasis on the role of ICT in transforming the regional economy and stimulating regional development. ICT have had an impact on the industrial structure of the region and the geographical location of different industries, not only in Europe but throughout the world. ICTs have also affected the relationship between customers and suppliers, because they contributed to the organization of many markets of semi-finished and finished products. However, there are significant differences between countries and regions, and also, between developed countries, with regard to their role in the development of ICT and their ability and propensity to adopt and apply ICT in various activities and sectors. The objective of this study is expected to examine the effect of ICT on the regional economic growth that comes from two sources: the role of each region in the production of the ICT and the speed of adoption of ICT in each region.
